HB 1 Passes through Committee with Riders

HB 1, the appropriations bill, passed the Appropriations Committee in the Texas House March 22, and incorporated several riders that may be of interest to NAMI members and other mental health advocates.

Riders that were incorporated into the bill that may be of interest are:
Privatization of 2 mental health hospitals, which appears as Rider 65 in the DSHS section of Article II (page II-68)
 
Study of State Mental Health System, which appears as Rider 75 in the DSHS section of Article II (page II-70)
 
Diversion of a percentage of current Crisis Funding to purchase community hospital beds for step-down from State Hospitals appears as Rider 64 in the DSHS section of Article II (page II-68) and Rider 71 in the DSHS section of Article II (page II-70)

The bill will now go to the House Calendars Committee and then to the full House for a vote.

You can voice your opinions on funding cuts for mental health services in the bill and/or on any of the included riders by contacting your representative.
