HIPAA Privacy Rule article

Please see the link at the bottom of this message for an article that describes how the HIPAA privacy rule is being misinterpreted in a way that often prevents families of individuals with mental illness access basic information about their loved ones. Medical providers have the authority to share necessary information, but often don’t because they fear legal consequences. NAMI Texas is currently engaged in an effort (House Bill 868) to bring the state’s health and safety code in line with HIPAA so that it becomes more clear that providers may share information with family members.

At the bottom of an article is a link to the members of the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, which is responsible for HIPAA oversight. Please let them know how HIPAA has affected the care and recovery of your loved one.
